The APBBC supports young biologists through the awarding of 2 scholarships every year.  This support is offered to undergraduates and graduates who are pursuing a degree in applied biology.  See below for the terms of reference and instructions for applying for this scholarship.


 

APB Scholarship Terms of Reference

 

1. Number of Scholarships: The APBBC will fund up to two scholarships of $1000 each year. The selection committee reserves the option to create graduate and undergraduate categories, and provide one scholarship for each (total of two), if the applications warrant this segregation. This is intended to provide undergraduates with an equal opportunity to compete for a scholarship with their undergraduate peers.

 

2. Eligibility: Recipients must be:

a.       The son or daughter, spouse, niece, nephew, granddaughter or grandson of a member in good standing of the Association,

b.      A student member of the APB

c.       A Biologist in Training

d.      An R.P.Bio, in good standing, who is returning to university to pursue a higher degree.

 

 Applicants must be enrolled in an Academic Program, similar to those in the membership guidelines.  Further guidance is listed below:

  • Eligibility includes son or daughter, spouse, niece, nephew, granddaughter or grandson undergraduate or student biologist who is entering the third or fourth year of an undergraduate program in biology (or a closely related area as specified in the membership guidelines).
  • Eligibility includes a BIT or an R.P.Bio entering post-graduate studies in a program that leads to a degree that will be used as a practicing  biologist (Biology or a closely related area as specified in the membership guidelines).
  • Winners will be expected to pursue or continue a career as a professional biologist.

Applicants will be eligible to re-apply for the scholarship in subsequent years. However, an applicant will only be eligible to receive a scholarship up to a maximum of two years.

 

3. Deadline: The final date for applications for the scholarship shall be July 31 of the year in which the student will be starting her/his third or fourth year or entering/continuing a post-graduate program.

 

4. Information required: The applicant shall provide information as outlined on an application form provided here as well as;

  • A letter to the scholarship board indicating the applicant’s qualifications, background, professional /extracurricular interests and activities.
  • Original transcripts; and
  • Two letters of reference.

 

The information provided is essential to inform the committee about the applicant’s goals, life experiences, motivations and extracurricular activities.

 

5. Adjudication: Applications shall be reviewed by a committee convened by the Chair of Awards and Scholarship Committee and two members of the APB.  In case of a conflict of interest (son, daughter, spouse, co-worker) a member of the selection committee will step down and another member will be appointed

 

6. Selection procedure: Selection shall be an assignment of points for each of the application, with the top scorer being awarded the scholarship. In case of a tie, the committee may interview the applicants by phone, review the applications, check with references and choose, or they may choose to divide the scholarship between the two students.

 

Scoring:

  • Each application will be evaluated on a scale of 50 points;
  • The transcript of marks will be evaluated out of 20 points;
  • The letters of reference will be evaluated out of 10 points; and
  • The personal information will be evaluated out of 20 points.

 

The committee reserves the right to choose not to award the scholarship in any year in which there is no candidate who scores more that 40 points out of 50

 

7. Distribution: A cheque will be forwarded to the winner on proof of registration at the post-secondary institution specified in the application.

 

8. Publication: A brief write-up taken from the information supplied by the applicant will appear in BioNews.

 

9.  Donations to a scholarship fund will be accepted. Donations and accrued interest will be used to finance the scholarship. The balance of the money required each year will come from the general revenue of the Association.

Application Instructions

 

When applying for this scholarship, we require the following information, which should be assembled in a folder before mailing.

 

1.      Complete the application form

2.      Include a short personal statement which tell us about yourself.  Please expand on the following:

  • interests;
  • activities out of school time; and
  • your goals for the future. 

3. Include a current resume

4. Forward original transcripts to the APB office.

3.  Arrange for two letters of reference to be sent to the APB office
